Fertility Supplements for Men and Women

RSS Feed

If you are ready to try and get pregnant or are having difficulties getting pregnant - this subject is for you.  Knowing which supplements to take is very important when preparing to try and get pregnant.  It takes 3-6 months to prepare your body for pregnancy.  It takes that long for both nutrition and supplements to take affect before trying to get pregnant.  Your prenatal supplement alone takes 3 months to absorb all the nutrition necessary before trying to conceive.  Understand that supplements are very specific to each person.  How much they you would need is dependent on a variety of different factors.

Before you buy a prenatal multivitamin it is important to know that not all vitamins are the same.  It is important to know that source.  Many vitamins are synthetic and are derived from soy.  Not good when your trying to get pregnant.  Soy increases estrogen and can imbalance your hormones.  I tell my patients to makes sure they are not eating any soy products.  There are a few exceptions but it is easy to just take them off all soy products.  A whole food prenatal multivitamin is best when trying to get pregnant.  I recommend Garden of Life for whole food vitamins.

Vitamin D is becoming important for fertility.  Many are vitamin D deficient.  They are now finding that vitamin D helps with ovulation.  Include a good omega 3 vitamin.  You don't necessarily need to do a fish oil.  Flax seeds are a great source of omegas.  They have an estrogenic and/or anti-estrogenic affect in the body. Many of us are estrogen dominant.   Flax seeds contain high amounts of anti-oxidant compounds called lignans. It means that flax seeds balanced the ratio of progesterone to estrogen. For women with estrogen dominance syndrome, this can mean a lot, including the diminishing of fibroids, cysts, PMS, increased fertility and the regulation of periods.  Fresh ground flax seeds is the best in getting the benefits of this affect.  Keep the fresh seeds in your freezer and ground when ready to use.  You can add them to yogurt, oatmeal and smoothies.

Be sure to add a probiotic supplement to your vitamin regiment.  Probioitics are important to all our cells in our body.  They are finding out we have billions of these good bacteria all over our bodies.  We focus a lot on the gut (which is important).  These probiotics are important to the development of your baby.  I like to take a probiotic and also eat probiotic foods such as keifer and fermented veggies.  Nowadays it is easy to find these items in the natural food market.

Adding a B-complex is helpful for moderating stress.  Be sure to use a whole food supplement here.  You can tell when your taking a synthetic B vitamin when you go to the bathroom because your urine will be bright yellow.  This shows the loss of vitamins.  It is also good to add some minerals to your supplement regiment.  Magnesium helps with sleep, constipation and reduces stress.  All minerals are grounding and calming.  You can do a mineral complex but again make sure it is a whole food based.
Some honorable mentions would be co-enzyme q10 and nattokinase.  Both of these help with circulation which is very important for conception.  Baby needs lots of blood circulation in order for him or her to get the nutrients they need.

It is important for men to also be taking supplements for fertility.  A whole food multi for men, omega-3, vitamin D, probiotics and a b-complex.   Also add a whole food vitamin C and Zinc.  These help increase male fertility and sperm productions.  If he is having issues with low sperm count then add maca root.  This has been shown to increase sperm count.
