"Bringing Hope, Harmony & Healing"
The question is, "Is caffeine safe when trying to get pregnant or during pregnancy?" The answer is really about the amount of caffeine. Everyone knows that too much caffeine is bad for everyone. A moderate amount of caffeine is fine for many. The problem with caffeine, is that it is a drug. This drug affects the nervous system and puts more stress on the body in particular on the adrenal glands. The caffeine that comes from coffee is a lot more than tea. Each cup of coffee has 100-300 mg of caffeine as apposed to tea which has 20-60 mg. It also can react more harshly. Part of that is the combination of chemicals that are in coffee.
Did you know that coffee is the most pesticide laden plant in the world? I only found this information out a few years ago. Because of an auto-immune disease, I gave up coffee naturally in my late 20's. I became a social coffee drinker and used half caff. I now realize why it was I reacted poorly to the caffeine in coffee. I switched my coffee to organic decaf and developed a great recipe that I will share below.
There has been several studies that show a link between caffeine and miscarriage. Let me first say that if you have ever had a miscarriage - it is not your fault! In 2008 a study showed that if a woman drank up to two cups of coffee a day (200 mg of caffeine), it would double the rate of miscarriage. Some doctors today still say that it is okay to drink coffee or have caffeine. In my opinion a very small to zero amount is necessary when trying to conceive or if your pregnant.
If you are trying to conceive and using caffeine for energy, then you are not ready to get pregnant. Understand that pregnancy drains your energy especially in the 1st and 3rd trimester. It is important to address your sleep and daily habits to see what is stealing your energy. A health and fertility coach, like myself, can help asses what may be going on and offer natural solutions for you to increase your energy. You will feel better and have a healthier and more pleasant pregnancy when you address these things ahead of time.
Now lets get to the good stuff and share this amazing alternative safe coffee for TTC & Pregnancy.
**Before I get into this understand that the information I am sharing is not for medical
diagnosis. It is for your information. Although I am sharing with you information
that comes from my expertise as a Chinese medical practitioner.
The first thing you will want to get is chaga mushroom powder. I bought mine on Amazon. There is not enough information out there that is studied to show it is safe or not for pregnancy. However, if you can have mushrooms while your pregnant - you can drink chaga. I also know of those who used during pregnancy and were fine. Having studied herbal medicine, all these things are okay during pregnancy with some exceptions. In other words - it won't hurt to experiment since it is all food. You can mix and match any of these to your comfort level.
I wanted to share this in my blog because this particular mushroom is great for those who are trying to conceive. Many mushrooms used in herbal medicine are great for the immune system. Immune issues cause problems for those who are trying to get pregnant. Some viruses even attack embryos. Mushrooms are also great for cysts and tumors. I personally developed a great Chinese herbal formula that treats cysts and tumors. I have had a high rate at success in getting rid of cysts for my patients. In my experience - this mushroom alone would not be strong enough to get rid of cysts but it would be helpful.
The second ingredient that I add to my coffee is organic Dandy Blend. This is a powder made from dandelions. I had read that dandelions are great for pregnancy because they reduce swelling. I also know that dandelions are great for a mild detox. If it is getting rid of excess water it is helping you detox. You don't want to do a big detox when pregnant but a mild amount is okay. However, I do recommend doing a good detox before trying to get pregnant.
I personally use coconut milk in my lattes but almond milk is a great option if you are pregnant. It has a good amount of calcium in it. I recommend using alternative milk as oppose to using cows milk. Cows milk has hormones, antibiotics and puss. Yes I said puss. Gross - right? Milk has a tendency to be mucous forming. based on that I would not recommend even doing organic.
The spices I added to this recipe were inspired because of fall. All of these herbs are used in Chinese medicine. The only contraindication in using these is if you have a tendency to be hot. If you are pregnant and your baby is moving around a lot could be a sign of to much heat in the body. A small amount should be fine.
Cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger are all great for the immune system. Cinnamon helps to regulate blood sugar. The cinnamon that is used in Chinese medicine (Gui Zhi), helps relieve period cramps. Nutmeg is good for pain. It helps stop diarrhea, treats cancer, insomnia and kidney disease. Only a small amount is fine during pregnancy. Ginger is one of my favorites to use during pregnancy. It helps with nausea, stomach issues, reduces edema and can also stop bleeding. Going over the actions of these herbs is a good lesson that everything we take into our bodies has an action. Adding this coffee to your diet may benefit your health.
